FAQ

Answers You Need to Get On The Road

WE HAVE A 16 YR. OLD, WHY MUST I GO THROUGH A DRIVING SCHOOL?

The driving age in NJ is 17. The state of NJ has an “early bird route” that allows a student driver, at the age of 16, to drive with supervision only after they receive a minimum of 6 hours of behind the wheel driving instruction with a NJ state-certified driving school.

DO I STILL NEED TO TAKE THE NJ PERMIT TEST IF I AM OLDER THAN AGE 16?

Yes. Any new driver younger than 21 years old is required to complete the full New Jersey MVC graduated driver licensing (GDL) program. There are also restrictions for drivers over the age of 21.

For more information, feel free to call our office (732) 774-4007 to discuss your situation, and we will be happy to assist you.

WHAT IS THE PROCESS FOR SCHEDULING THE NJ ROAD TEST?

ML Driving School will schedule the appointment to take the behind the wheel NJ Road Test when the permit is issued.  The date of the exam will be listed on the lower center portion of the back side of the NJ learners permit. Most NJ Road Test appointments are scheduled for early morning on the date of the student driver’s 17th birthday

CAN I TAKE MY 16 YR. OLD TO MVC AND GET THE PERMIT MYSELF?

No. The driving school must do all that for you. In fact, if the student driver loses their permit, you must contact the driving school to get a replacement for him or her.

DO YOUR CARS HAVE DUAL CONTROLS?

Yes. As required by the state of NJ, all ML Driving School vehicles have a dual brake system, allowing the instructor to stop the car if (or when) necessary.

MY CHILD HAS NOT TAKEN THE HIGH SCHOOL DRIVER EDUCATION CLASS AND HAS NOT TAKEN THE WRITTEN KNOWLEDGE TEST. WHAT DO WE DO?

Every new driver must pass the written knowledge test (NJ Permit Test); however, there is NO requirement for the high school course in order to get a learners permit.

HOW LONG IS THE WAIT FOR OUR CHILD TO GET ON THE ROAD AND START THEIR TRAINING?

While we generally have an active list of students taking our courses, we are able to begin the first lesson within the same week that the permit is issued. We suggest that you schedule in advance, and ensure that you have all of your paperwork completed timely, so that we can begin your 6 hour behind the wheel driver training as soon as possible.

DO WE HAVE TO PROVIDE YOU WITH ORIGINAL DOCUMENTS TO GET THE NJ LEARNERS PERMIT?

Yes. We must have original documents (a valid US Passport, Original Birth Certificate, Signed “Green Card”, etc.) in order to get the permit.  We will hold these documents until the completed on the 6 hour behind the wheel training.

The original documents will be returned to you with the validated NJ learners permit.  In additional to the above documents, you must also provide at check made out to “NJ MVC” for $14 for the permit, as well as the “Blue Card” (proof of passing the written knowledge or NJ permit test).

CAN I USE MY OWN CAR FOR A ROAD TEST?

Yes you can, with some stipulations. It is not required that a driving school take your child to the road test; however, you MUST have an emergency brake in the middle of the front seats IF your vehicle has a full center console.  If the center console denies access to the brake pedal for an emergency stop by the inspector, you are not allowed to use that vehicle.

If you do not have a suitable vehicle, or if you would like to have ML Driving School take your student driver to the test, we are happy to provide you with current pricing for this service and to get you on our schedule.  Please feel free to contact us at (732) 774-4007 or email us at drive@mldrivingschool.com.
